We started the morning by pedaling through McGregor Iowa and up Pikes Peak. It's a 1 1/2 mile steep up hill. I dressed for the predicted weather which was a low of 58 and a high of 76 degrees with clear skys. At the top of Pike's Peak, it began raining and some wind. At the 20 mile mark the support vehicle met us and I added layers to my clothing, putting on my bike tights and my long sleeves. We did another steep uphill and down hill and saw lightening all around us. At mile 24 we were met by the support vehicle saying we were being called off the roads due to safety concerns. Bicycles and lightening are not a good mix.
Who would have thought that last night's hotel AmericInn in Prairie Du Chain had a celebration tree with flags on it. I felt like I was at home....
This elephant was greeting us on our early morning ride into McGregor Iowa.
Pikes Peak 1 1/2 miles straight up hill with a steep grade. I was a little envious of the motorcycles roaring by us.
It was a beautiful sight from the top even though the rain had started.
An Iowa farm in the rain and fog.
Right outside our hotel in Dyersville Iowa which is the home to the sight of "Field of Dreams".
We had a little more excitement than normal today, but we did cross a state line and that means Margaritas tonight. Our guide Denise was fulfilling her promise.
We all made it safe to the hotel. I had a swim and a hot tub, did a load of laundry and wrote a few post cards. Tomorrow we are in to Muscatine Iowa which is 98 miles straight south. Weather is predicted to be 90 degrees with 80% humidity. We will see. Today did not work out as predicted. I am hoping for 70 degrees, no wind, no rain..... We are getting an early start at 7am.
Rhonda, you truly amaze me with your drive and stamina both physically and emotionally. To have taken this on as you have is something only few could do so soon. Bless you! Safe travels...
